2. President Ayyub Khan to tour America (circa 1960-65)
*The audio says the “jungee” means “war-like”. However, the correct translation is “war-related”. Apologies!
This article is about the then President of Pakistan, Ayyub Khan‘s visit to the United States. At the time, Pakistan was a strong ally of the US against the Communist bloc. Ayyub Khan, though called President, was not really President, but in fact Pakistan‘s first dictator from 1958 to 1969. Hes broadly remembered today for his increased economic growth but also for destroying Pakistan‘s young democracy and pursuing policies which alienated east Pakistan, or modern day Bangladesh.
Also, just a word to the listener. My goal is not to indoctrinate anyone about whats right or wrong with any country or people, but merely to improve your Urdu. Ill try to present statements about Pakistani history or people more or less factually, rather than morally. I‘ll leave the judgments of whats right or wrong up to you. So if you like Ayyub Khan, or some other modern politician, great. And if you don’t, that‘s okay too.
